It's not What you do, It's Why you do it. This famous quote from Simon Sinek, leadership expert and author, is foundational to the wellness programs that I create, to my marketing, and to the way I motivate people to take care of their health.
In his 2010 TEDx talk, Sinek gave us a great illustration of how this works, citing Apple's success in marketing the iPod. The well- known silhouette of a youth listening to an iPod, seen in Apple's mid-2000s commercials, was its key to branding its mp3 player, a product that wasn't much different from some of its competitors'. Apple sold the why - how cool you would be if you used their product - which we all know was a very successful strategy!
Part of my work with the Underhill Life Community, and with my other clients, is to help people buy into the self-care skills of fitness, relaxation, and eating well. The skills themselves aren't that complicated. The key is getting my clients to know why they should care for their own health - and find the time for that care. People need to find a strong why to make the changes to feel better.
Another famous thinker, Friedrich Nietzsche, said, "He [she] who has a strong enough why can bear with almost any how." Even if that "how" is eating more greens, or joining a yoga class!
So today I ask you why. Why would your life be better if you put just a little more time and energy into your self-care?
